Ampuriabrava (in Catalan and officially Empuriabrava) is a population entity in the municipality of Castellón de Ampurias, in the Alto Ampurdán region, province of Gerona (Spain). It is located in the Gulf of Roses, surrounded by the Ampurdán Marshes natural park, and is the most important residential marina in Europe, with about 24 km of navigable canals.1 It had a census population of 6,915 inhabitants in 2019 ( INE).
Physical geography
The center is located in the Gulf of Rosas, surrounded by the Ampurdán Marismas natural park, between the municipalities of Rosas and San Pedro Pescador. It has a 1.5 km long beach that extends from the border with Rosas to the mouth of the Muga River, south of the urbanization.
History
Before the construction of the center of Ampuriabrava, the land was part of the Empordà swamps, a geographical figure without any type of legal protection. In these lands, very suitable for rice cultivation, there were 5 large farmhouses: Llebrer, Modaguer, Moixó, Vell and Torre Ribota, all in the hands of large owners and in pasture areas. The coastal part, called Tribanes, was divided into small properties that had arisen from the confiscation,
The first urban development attempts arose in 1964 at the hands of the Marquis of Sant Morí together with the businessmen Miquel Arpa i Batlle and his brother-in-law Fernando Vilallonga i Rossell. The project, which was presented to the city council in 1965, was highly criticized by agricultural owners. However, in 1967 the first canals and homes began to be built, according to the high-level residential marina model. This was inspired, above all, by other similar projects that emerged in Florida and which in turn sought to imitate the romantic ideal of classical Venice.3 In Europe, for example, the Port Grimaud marina on the Côte d'Azur had already been planned. with a similar model. The sales of the Ampuriabrava properties were a success, especially in Germany. Thus, in 1975, the second phase began, which included an extension of 600 hectares that was ultimately not completed due to the growth of conservation awareness combined with the global economic crisis.
The environmental mobilization campaign included demonstrations and solidarity calls to preserve the territory and as a result of these movements the definitive protection of the swamps by the Generalitat of Catalonia arose,3​ creating the Marismas del Ampurdán natural park in 1983.1​ Finally, The private managers of the marina became public, through municipal means, since the 1980s. This change consolidated the residential model of Ampuriabrava, increasing and improving the infrastructure and carrying out the necessary initiatives for a more stable and less seasonal population. 3
Demography
8,001 inhabitants of the 12,111 inhabitants of the municipality of Castellón de Empurias reside in Ampuriabrava (INE 2009) and it is estimated that in the summer months the population rises to around 75,000 inhabitants.
